Letter to Amanda~

"Ok here's what's going on... We are opening a clothing boutique in my hometown of Broken Bow. It's set to open February 8 with a grand opening on the 22nd. We have been preparing the building (painting, ordering carpet, getting curtains, etc), ordering clothes, and setting up the business licensing. It is so hard!!!! But exciting at the same time.

On the opposite spectrum we are opening a sandwich/coffee/soup shop where I was raised in Hochatown... It is a tourist destination because of the beautiful lake that texans and other travelers visit in the summer because of water sports and fishing... Plus we have a pretty decent river that fly fishermen come to. So the sandwich shop is being built from the ground up! We are looking for land right now, preparing the business plan so we can get a SBA loan, and fighting with my dad on how much to spend on the land! He has seen this place explode and is not too happy about the land prices around here, but that is inflation!

I would tell you to google the area but there really aren't any great websites to display what I'm talking about... We might run around taking pics soon to show our families in Oregon. The dogs are loving the open spaces! Jake and TJ keep chasing wild animals and getting lost!! We can't let Jake out anymore without his leash because as soon as he see's a rabbit he's gone!"

We will post pictures soon!!!! We miss everyone like crazy! Please keep in touch with us through email!

Clear confusion...

I have so many things swimming around in my head that I want to write about! I will begin posting some of my crazy and fun recipes soon. I just need to figure out what I'm doing first. I have a bad habit of not measuring. I have been on one crazy ride over the past few months. Beginning with our venture to Nashville and currently finding me in Oklahoma. Somewhere I swore I'd never return! It's true what they say, "Never, Say NEVER!"

Travis and I had to make a trip to Nashville to take care of some personal business. We arrived yesterday and found ourselves lounging around all day debating on what to do first. How many times have you and your loved ones had the conversation about what's for dinner? We often have a well thought out weekly meal plan full of quick fixes and fine dinners, but when you're living out of suitcases and half packed boxes, and empty refrigerators you're limited. But never mind these limitations! Travis and I always find a way to eat in utmost style!

Around 6:30 p.m. on Friday night in lovely Brentwood a couple of unsuspecting employees greeted us as we entered their wine store. As we rounded their display they got a full, big gulp style, drink of Travis and I. In our sweats... Seriously! Ratty old sweats, Friday night, up to no good! :-) We roamed around the store for a while trying to pick some new wines to try and searching out our old favorites. They watched us carefully for a while, paying attention to our moves, offering assistance frequently... They finally realized we weren't there to rob them, or steal anything and we were in fact wine enthusiasts in search of some good drinks.

After dropping $70 on 4 bottles of wine and a bottle of beer we head to grab dinner. None other than Chick-fil-a! Haha! Yes, that is us! Blow your money on the wine and scrimp on the dinner! Just a classic night in with my fiance: wine, chick-fil-a, and a movie... Well, I watched a movie at least. I don't know what he was up to.

Grad School....

Compassion=Happiness...

I've taken this little statement from a self-awareness site that I subscribe to... But it makes so much sense for me today. Today it speaks to me more than anything they have posted in a while.

I am working on the beginnings of my applications to graduate programs. Yes, I have chosen to go back to school. With a different mindset this time though. If I accumulate another $80,000 in debt then it'll be strictly for school costs, not play. Anyhow, back to the Compassion part. It makes perfect sense to me because no one should even consider investing themselves into anything without having that motivational driving force known as PASSION.
Compassion, on the other hand, leads us to love, to achieve, to move forward, to make differences. Because compassion is our deep routed desire to alleviate others' pain and discomfort or distress.

Why does this speak to me so much? It's me! I want to save the world. I want to take away the hurt. I want other's to have the opportunities to live pain-free or pain-reduced lives. Most of all I want to address the problems that may arise in an adolescents life which most people view as deviant behavior, but may in fact be something much more... What if our children really are good children? What if their acting out is simply a disorder that they are battling which no one has identified? What if they have Bipolar 2?

And now I look toward Grad School. I know now what I have been trying to find for the last year and 5 months. I now know where I am supposed to be in 5 days, in 5 months, and in 5 years. The unnecessary stress and anxiety is gone. The clarity is refreshing! And so maybe it took Travis and I both moving away from our comfort zones, the people we love and care about, and our overall cultural norms to identify what we needed for ourselves. And maybe to develop the Passion for our futures and for me to channel my Compassion.

But the greatest news of all is that we are coming home! We have seen the struggles of society from a different perspective. And frankly and much sadder perspective... When we were in Oregon we kept hearing how bad the employment rate was in Central Oregon and how massive the job losses were... How things were only going to get worse.... Well think of this. Oregon has a much higher minimum wage, for those seeking minimum wage part-time jobs to make ends meet, than the rest of the U.S. And the whole cost of living crap that economists have determined is far from accurate. Here in Tennessee, I am still working to break even from the amount of money I have had to put into my uniform requirement for my $2.13/hr serving job at a fine dining establishment where the guests only tip 10% because I am in the south!!

So, the grass is actually greener in Oregon! And I intend to kiss the ground it grows from when I return in t-59 days!

What could you do with $80,000...

Well I guess I've been given this question before and I'm pretty sure I didn't win the grand prize. Instead I obtained a degree, enjoyed the college life to its utmost fullest, and now find myself without a job. How can that be? They all said, "You'll go to college, you'll get a great degree, and you'll be able to pay off those student loans as soon as you graduate."

Reality: I graduated at the beginning of the beautiful thing we are all calling the GREAT RECESSION. Hello! I didn't say this could happen this way. Who ok'd all of this "recession" talk and "unemployment rates rising" stuff? So instead of landing a terrific career that would pay off all of the debt I accumulated I have been relatively unemployed for over 3 months now. Wait, I take that back... Much longer. I graduated last June and worked as a server on a resort for a year until I decided to dig into the job search. Now I am knuckle deep, a few scratches and bruises, and still no job.

I know that we will all make it out of this soon. But will it be soon enough to rope in an income that will assist me in my education loan that is equivalent to a house loan... And in the mean time I will pick myself up off my chemical laden carpet floor and knock down every restaurant door within a 25 mile radius.

WE WILL PREVAIL!

$207 dollars later....

Our stomachs are full... OF MCDONALDS that is!!! Argh! Travis has been dying to use his Gift Card that he got from work when he left this summer. I am still wondering why they got him a McDonald's gift card. They used to always comment on the oh so FABULOUS lunches Travis got to take to work :-) Compliments of me of course! Ha ha! But seriously he did have some pretty good lunches.

Anyway, here we sit, watching Monday night football (well sorta), feeling hungover sick from McDonald's, with over $200 dollars of groceries in our refrigerator. Why? Because my pants don't fit! And because Travis's pants are beginning to fit. Most of the weight gain is contributed to the amount of stress we have been under since our move, but some of it is due to our pathetic mournful eating habits that are strictly a result of us wallowing in our lack of employment sorrows! So I have decided to hit the extreme old faithful diet program. SOUTH BEACH DIET.

Yes, yes, I said it... DIET! I hate the ideas of diets. But when you get to the point we have allowed ourselves to get to you really have to reset your mind and body so that you are eating better when it's all said and done. We eat super awesome healthy meals typically. But lately all of that sugar has grown lips and teeth and a tongue and does a darn good job of calling my name! And Travis is no exception. He has succumbed to the calls too.

And tomorrow morning the starvation commences! So we are going to walk hand in hand down the diet trail until we get so cranky from the lack of caffeine and sugar we begin trying to push one another off the path... Coping skills will definitely come into play in the upcoming weeks. So continue to think of us as you eat your fabulous meals and go to your fabulous jobs. Oh, and did we mention.... Be thankful for every pay check you get because there is someone out there in the world tonight just dreaming of the day that they can scrub a toilet or clean out a horse stall for a couple of bucks pay....

We'll keep you posted on our adventures as they arise.

Oh my goodness,

oh my goodness, oh my goodness!!!! We're here!!! In Nashville, well Brentwood actually...

The last couple of days felt like they took an entire week to live. We spent some time with my family in Broken Bow trying to regroup so that we could hit the road again all refreshed and ready to go! When we started out this morning we were both pretty quiet... I was going over in my head what I would like to see when we got here and what I was expecting to happen over this next week. I understand that the average job search during a healthy economic climate can take up to two months... So my goal is to condense that into one week in a very difficult and cranky economic climate!

PRAY FOR US!!! :-)

Brentwood is absolutely beautiful. We haven't had a chance to take any pictures of the area yet. Since arriving we've had to check in, get groceries, and unpack... AGAIN! I'm really feeling for those nomads right about now. But when we went to grab groceries we drove around the block before heading back to the hotel. We have once again regained momentum for our job search. The area just around our hotel is loaded with prospective employment. The area looks very promising and it reminds us of a very well manicured, very green, and very clean Keizer but it is a big business park. (If you can imagine a more green and more clean place.)

Before we actually got here Travis and I both have gone through periods of anticipation, anxiety, and outright nervousness! But being here has renewed our faith and assurance of why we made this decision to move. I know the next few days, weeks, and possibly month will be especially trying; however, when you put two very stubborn, bullheaded, jobless, twenty-somethings in the middle of an unfamiliar place they will persevere. Believe me.... This town will know Travis and Kacharel before it's all said and done!

Sorry for taking so long to get a new post up! Broken Bow has very little access to the Internet. And being that Broken Bow is my hometown, I didn't even think to take pictures of it for everyone to see... But have no fear- we do have to go back and grab a couple of things we left behind.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We love each and every one of you!

Driving into the...

Great unknown! We are at the end of our sightseeing and now it will soon be time to get back to reality :-( We have seen some of the most amazing creations on this trip that have reminded us just how small we really are, and just how big God is... We've had a lot of time to talk and try to sort out a game plan :-) But plans are for normal people, right?! I've heard of long road trips making or breaking relationships, and I would definitely have to say we did great. I feel like we have actually grown as a couple and have developed some very important skills that we will use throughout the remainder of our life. COMMUNICATION is key! We've loved every minute of this trip. We look back at the end of every day as we're lying in bed and we are able to say, "Today was amazing!" I have been moved to tears many times on this journey. I have had many experiences where chills came over my body and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I have been reminded of how wonderful it is to have such loving family and friends. We are so thankful, again, for everyone's continued love and support. All we need now is prayers for our job search in Nashville!

The slides you will see are from our adventure across Utah! Starting at Bryce Canyon, we then drove to some other National Park to see the Castle Rock and Chimney Rock formations, and finally ending it with the Arches! We hit a pretty hellatious thunderstorm at the arches which was unbelievably beautiful! It was over quick so we could grab some shots. But anyway, enjoy the show and we will speak to everyone soon!

Unbelievable majesty...

We were able to see some of the most beautiful creations today! After sleeping through some light rain, in the warmth of our new sleeping bag, we ventured off to Zion National Park. It was absolutely breathtaking! We drove all the way through it and out the other side to a little town that is blessed to have these formations as their back yard! These will be some of the first pictures you see...

When we left the Park we headed south to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We went through several showers (and thunderstorms) before reaching the canyon. It kind of appeared out of no where... We were in the middle of a forest that resembled Oregon and then all of a sudden you come up to the canyon! On the way we were able to see some Bison! Super cool!

So the Grand Canyon was absolutely amazing! After leaving there we headed back north to Cannonville. We ran through more thunderstorms... We were worried we wouldn't be able to set up camp because the rain was so hard! But we did.

Enjoy the pictures! They are fabulous!

On the road again...

Day 3:

We froze last night! It got pretty cold in the tent so we decided to find a sports store to grab some goodies to help with warmth. Mind you, we are in Ely, Nv, three hundred and sixty something miles round trip to the nearest Wal-Mart! Travis was able to locate a little sporting goods store in downtown Ely where we were able to get a sleeping bag and some socks. We had to take a picture of the local cinema… You’ll see it in the pictures.

We finally got on the road and headed toward the Lehman Caves. We soon learned that dogs were not really welcome anywhere in the park around the caves. We knew that they wouldn’t actually be able to be in the caves, but there was no where near where we could even take them for boarding. We came across a family who had split up to view the caves and the husband/dad offered to keep an eye on them while we took the tour. Our pictures aren’t in any way a good depiction of what we saw.

After leaving the Lehman Caves we had a pretty long drive to Glendale, Ut. Rain was lingering overhead while we set up camp so we worked fast. Too fast actually! We got it set up and then we were like, “Now what?” So when we asked the lady manning the KOA office about the general area she chuckled and said have fun. With a rumbling in our tummy’s we headed off to check it out.

FYI Glendale, blink, it’s gone! So we drove a little further to a little town named Orderville. It looked quaint. We found a Soup shop where we grabbed some grub. As we were waiting for our food Travis happened upon a little book that described the history of this little town. Well, let’s just say it is one of those conversations we will have to have in person! Here’s a hint. It is derived from The Original Order…. Population 600!

And there was a little surprise for us while we were there! They were about to have the county rodeo so we were able to witness the Parade that was in honor of the kick off of the rodeo. Clowns, rodeo queens, and the local riffraff.

We got out of town as soon as that was over. You’ll see the video. Got back to camp, I beat Travis at Bocce, watched a movie, let the puppies chew some bones, and then passed out!

"Today was fun... I got to drive over 100 mph in spots..." This was Travis's response when I said tell me about your day. Trust me, the road was very very very straight!

It has been a long day, but definitely a good one. We have seen lots of really cool scenery. When I'm driving through some of these places I can't help but think about how small I really am and how big this world is... God is good!

We are at camp right now in Ely, Nevada. We have intentions of visiting some caves tomorrow and the Great Basin. It will all depend on if the pups are allowed to stay nearby... We can't just take off and leave them in the cars!

Anyhow, sitting on our bed right now really considering falling asleep very soon!!! Roughing it is rough! (Not like we're really truly roughing it though, I am hooked up to wifi right now after all)

Note: Jake is definitely an inside dog.

So we're out...

Day 1 has been pretty easy going so far. We didn't make it out of town until 11:00 a.m. But we had a good drive. The dogs are resting peacefully before we introduce them to their extended dog family. That one will be interesting... They'll get to let out some pinned up energy. We will be staying in Reno tonight with Sheryl, Mark & Dani! Then hitting the road again tomorrow. Thanks again for all of the thoughts and prayers! We should have some more exciting pictures for tomorrow.

We are so blessed....

to have such a wonderful family and close network of friends. Yesterday Terry (aka Perry) & Jamy hosted a family BBQ for us departing crazy kids! It was amazing! Good times and great food! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out... We love you all dearly!

Our Pre-Travel Adventures...

On Saturday, while having a fabulous breakfast at the Original Pancake House, we all of a sudden decided to head to Crater...

Within an hour we had a lunch packed, Izzy loaded up, gas in the rig and we took off!

Click to play this Smilebox scrapbook: Crater Lake

Our first stop was the Newberry Lava Somethings :-) Look it up! It was super-d-duper cool!

After the lava lakes we stopped at Paulina Falls....

My favorite part of the day had to be crater! Even though I was beginning to sunburn super bad...

Nannie's Status

As of now we are waiting on a transport so that nannie can have a private room that is no longer under 24 hour supervision. This is good news! They've already begun unhooking her from some of the tubes to prep her for transport.

We've spoken with the anesthesiologist again and she is confident in the epidural working efficiently in the next few hours. This will keep nannie from having to take the pain medicine which makes her drowsy.

She's already wanting to jump up and run out of here ;-). Not really physically ready, but mentally!

Broad Area of Interest:

And so it has been said to land a job in an area that highly interests you.... :-) I thought that is what I was attempting to do by completing my degree in Public Health. Maybe that area of interest was just a little too broad. Saving the world. Attacking pharmaceutical companies. Fighting domestic abuse. Crusading against adolescent alcohol and drug abuse. Educating families and children on safe sexual behaviors.

So that has all been established. And now I have to look a little broader and decide what else may peak my interest. Really? After a $50 thousand dollar bachelors degree? I'm expected to look into "other" areas of interest. They say that in times of economic hardships such as these we need to broaden our horizons and ferociously attack the endless possibilities of employment available. I laugh at this.

Am I really expected to walk away from something that I haven't even had a chance to succeed in? Oh well. Now my dreamboard will be slightly altered and the research will begin. I will continue to search for job postings in my selected field and also research companies that operate in my field of choice.

For fear of sounding like a whining child I shall end my platform here.

In other news...

I have been bedside for about 4 hours now in my nannies hospital room. I can't seem to find the time to practice my own breathing treatments which will inevitably regulate my heart and my nerves. We've had some moments of uncertainty... Simply because the nurses just come floating in and begin working on the numerous tubes and monitors that are all hooked up to her body.

She is completely stable. No need for worry. Since I have been here she has had some issues with her spinal tap. She wasn't receiving the medicine that induces a numbing response and therefore was finding herself in quite a bit of pain. As a response to the pain she continued to hit her pain medicine button to administer more narcotics. Well... All the narcotics really do is cause her to be drowsy and out of it and it didn't do too much for the pain that she was beginning to feel slowly increase. Finally, the nurse called the anesthesia resident in and they determined that her machine wasn't working properly. This, in the meantime, has been taken care of and now she is sleeping soundly.

I can only imagine what it must feel like for papa or any other loved ones of family members in this same situation. Uncertainty, confusion, fear, and the list could probably continue to go on but now I need to get to some research.

Thank you for your interest... HOWEVER!

I have decided in addition to posting about wedding plans, which have been put on hold, I would also describe the life of my never ending job search. I have a conviction on my record due to a violently abusive past relationship where I decided to retaliate in self defense. Unfortunately for myself, I was convicted of Domestic Assault in the 4th degree. According to a "jury of my peers" I used an unreasonable amount of force in an attempt to protect myself.

So here I am... 22 months later attempting to obtain gainful employment and the only people willing to accept the risk of employing me are restaurants and volunteer organizations. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love the organizations that I currently work with, they just don't pay the bills. And student loan debt is entering repayment.

Anyhow, the list of job applications happens to be endless and it seems that I have developed this highly contagious and fatal disease that would put anyone interested in hiring me in a very unstable and life threatening position. Not only is the job market already scarred from the economy but now I have to put the icing on the cake with a "conviction" on my record. I get a knot in my stomach every time I reach that line on an application that requires comment on criminal history. On paper I look good until a prospective employer reaches that ONE little line.

I can only imagine what must come to mind when they reach that line. What could they possible be depicting in their brains? Do they see me with dyed black hair, pale skin and combat boots? Wait, who actually has assault charges? Is it more of a trailer trash type image? Whatever it must be definitely taints any chance I have of reaching the interview process.

But moving on...

I had an amazing birthday two days ago. I couldn't be happier than I am now (including my state of employment)! Travis is a doll and bought me a pearl necklace and black diamond earrings!!! They are absolutely beautiful!

I happen to be in an airport right now waiting on a flight to Houston where I will accompany my family during my grandmother's surgery tomorrow. Scary, but necessary.

I must go!

Recuperation Station

This weekend was super long! But all is well and I did find the time to do some brainstorming for the wedding... Lying in bed, thermostat up (trying to immitate Houston weather), playoffs are on, and my fiance is by my side. Resting and relaxation is a great thing!

Traveling, no matter how short or how far, will require much more time than you ever actually allot for yourself. Most of the time is idle in the airport that you didn't take into account, and therefore probably left stuff behind that you could have been working on. Eventually, you begin to notice the frequent flyers by how zombie-esque they drone through the airports. They are the ones with the glaze in their eyes, never fully focusing or noticing what's around them, and often claim their place in space where ever they land. They are the business travelers and the frequent vacationers. Today I saw the first timer. He had never been on an airplane before.

I wonder about him. I wonder what he must have been thinking when that very very small plane attempted to leave the earth and stable itself among the rough winds. I begin to feel somewhat sorry for him because this particular ride was his first. And for the numerous times I've flown I would have to recount this flight as possibly one of my top 5 worst!

I'm rattling on now... I just wanted to share the few pictures I did take from this last trip. I promised Travis that I would take much more of Houston so that he could see it through my eyes. I failed. I had way too much going on and really nothing at all at the same time.
